Getting on Your Nerves

Are you getting on your own nerves?

Hey there! Tongue and cheek here--this week's blog is about the Sacral and the Lumbar Plexus. I looked up Plexus. It rhymes with Lexus and is a collection of nerves that either affect us on the backside or the front side (mostly below the belt). If you've ever had symptoms or an injury in that region, you will definitely want to read more. This week we will take a look at that plus acknowledge the negative emotions that often get associated with the month of January. But keep reading because you'll find the complete schedule at Yoga by Dayna and direct links to register for Delicious Deep Stretch this Monday or Mat Pilates this Tuesday. I am so happy to have you with me today! Grab yourself a hot tea and read on.

Mid January Blahs or Ahas?

January gets a bad rap for being the month of blah blah blah mood. In the North the weather can certainly be cause of blame but here in Texas? Not so sure we can hold January accountable. We've been pretty darn lucky! This weekend's big cold front is just a bleep in the usually sunny skies. Besides, rain is welcome! However, if you find yourself feeling more stuck in the muck than usual, take a closer look. Click below to learn about Seasonal Affective Disorder. Bring some light into your space!

Your Electrical Box

So often clients come to me with crazy stories of sciatic pain that shoots down the leg, groin pain that seems to come from the groin itself, and the pain that makes sitting at a football game a great tragedy. Wouldn't you like to understand this all a bit better? As I continue my Schatz Method training on Nerves and Alignment, the information blows me away. Let's get to it!

Learn More about the Lumbar Plexus

The Great Nerve Plexus in the Pelvis

Think of the Lumbar Plexus as an electrical junction box in your house (your body.) It is characterized by a nice bundle of fibers of organized nerves that disperse in front or behind the sacrum. The nerves are not at fault. They simply relay information and prevent one injury from damaging the other guys in the house. What the fibers are trying to say is "Hey, get off me! You're stepping on me and I don't like it". Ever step on a stingray? I haven't but I did step on a scorpion by accident once. Yikes! The scorpion was really mad at me! Anyway, so, let's say that your pelvis is just slightly off kilter. One side will have expansiveness; the other will be getting stepped on.

What may start as an ankle roll affects the knee. Why? The ankle articulates with the tibia. The tibia or shin bone then articulates with the knee. On the north side of the knee is the femur. Any wiggle room on one side directly impacts the other side. The further north we go, the more room for wiggles and errors. What if the house you live in starts to teeter totter over a cliff? If you reside in California and you've gone through a mudslide, this may not seem too far fetched. The house is somewhat grounded but no longer level. All your prized furniture in the house is off balance. China pieces on the shelves slide to one end, crashing on the unlevel floor. Items are no longer grounded and solid.

Can you see where I am going with this? When we fall down or twist weird to pick up a heavy box, the body quickly compensates. One side is doing what its always done (but not longer efficiently) and the other side is struggling to fill the gap. The injury may have occurred in the ankle (or knee or hip) but the pelvis is lopsided and growing more lopsided overtime. We can have surgery but the body simply recognizes that something has changed and that it must compensate.

Is your Sacrum Teeter tottering?

Simple awareness is a great place to start. Once your natural curves are back in alignment with each other, the correct muscles can perform again. Please consider this when doing anything physical. Fitness classes often move along at a breakneck speed. Don't compromise form over function--Listen to your body! Moving on...
