YOGA INSIGHTS: When your shoulder shudders |
September 27, 2025 | Yoga By Dayna |
The Hidden Heroes of Shoulder Stability Your shoulders are marvels of mobility, allowing for an impressive range of motion. But this freedom comes with a vulnerability that requires special attention. Today, we'll explore the remarkable group of muscles responsible for keeping your shoulders safe and functional—the rotator cuff.
Before we move on, let me just say that we are so fortunate to have the Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce. I was so blessed to run into Karen Schultz, President of the Chamber, at the annual Lake Travis Taste of Texas. If you haven't attended this amazing annual event, my only thought it that you must not know about it. Every penny benefits local owners, like me, who are helping you in some small way. My heart is full from interacting with Andrew Rincon, owner of Craigo O's and Hops & Thyme, Megan, of Buonocello Pasta Parties, Kate Surface of Canyon Grill, Trevor at Yachties, Amanda and Aaron at Cowboy Pools, Pete Clark and Heather @ Cafe Blue, Evelyn Matchen, Jewelry Designer, Josh, of Infamous Brewery, Bueno Cello's own Megan Tull, Mei Szeto, jeweler, Five Souls Winery, Spicewood Winery, Alejandra Melo, of Custom Melo Hat Bar, and Shawn Austin of the Stevie Nicks of Austin, TX band. Wow! We are forever grateful for the Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce and all the work that went behind this annual event to help local business owners thrive. |
Understanding Your Rotator Cuff: Nature's Shoulder Guardians |
The rotator cuff isn't a single muscle but a team of four small but mighty muscles that surround your shoulder joint. These muscles—supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis (often remembered by the acronym "SITS")—work together to stabilize the ball of your upper arm bone in the shallow socket of your shoulder blade. Isn't it crazy how our hip has a nice large hollow to support the femur while the shoulder has to put up with a super shallow cup that is sideways? No wonder we all have a shoulder story to tell at one time or another. |
Unlike larger muscles that create obvious movements, the rotator cuff performs the subtle but crucial work of maintaining proper shoulder alignment during movement. Think of them as the choreographers behind the scenes, ensuring your shoulders move with grace and protection. |
Signs Your Rotator Cuff Needs Attention |
Pain when reaching overhead or behind your back Weakness when lifting or rotating your arm Clicking or popping sensations during shoulder movements Difficulty sleeping on the affected side Limited range of motion in your shoulder joint |
How Yoga Supports Rotator Cuff Health Mindful yoga practice can strengthen and balance the muscles around your shoulders. Poses like Sphinx, Baby Cobra, and gentle Eagle arms create balanced mobility and stability. Equally important is learning which movements might stress vulnerable shoulders and how to modify them appropriately. |
Your Shoulders Deserve Care |
Next time you practice, take a moment to acknowledge these small but mighty muscles. Understanding your body's architecture helps you move with greater awareness and protection.
