Walking Your Booty Off: Holiday Edition

When you go for a walk, have you ever thought about how your gait might possibly lead to back pain later on?  We know that 90% of pain originates from somewhere else.  Anatomy also shows us that, when you step forward, your back leg requires a hefty squeeze in the booty.  That's your Gluteus Maximus.  What if one side uses the glutes more than the other?  Well, as you can imagine, one side of your spine is not properly supported.

Stand up and take a step forward.  Stop.  Notice your back leg.  Is your Glute Max active?  Is it taut?  Stay here.  Notice your front leg.  As you push off from the front leg, does your Quadricep engage?  Notice how your toes are energized.

There's so much going on with a simply walking step.  As we get a bit older, we may forget to communicate with our bodies.  Oh!  Notice the front knee.  Now notice the hip above that knee.  The muscle there keeps your knee from buckling!

Your body is simply an amazing miracle.

With proper care and attention, you can move and groove for many years to come.  However, after 24 hours of sitting, your muscles already begin to atrophy.  Don't let that happen!  Get your booty off the couch and enjoy the fresh cool air.  Be sure to dress for the weather.

Holiday Stretch Tip: More Contraction = Better Stretch

In the New Year, I'll be taking out my life size man skeleton poster again.  It's time to see how your plumb line matches the man's perfect plumb line.  In the New Year, you get a fresh start!  You will be praised, not judged, for showing up on your mat.  You will be praised, not judged, for coming to classes after a long absence.

I want what's best for you.

This is why I have studied for over 13 years to know the body at a deeper level.  This comes with the expertise help of the International Association of Yoga Therapists, Linda Lack, PH D, Masters in Movement, Chuck Duff of Coaching the Body, Power Pilates of New York City, CoreFirst Bands training from Fit Bodies Inc., and 44 CEU hours with Gina Schatz of The Schatz Method for Movement Practitioners.

During this season of indulgence, remember that effective movement comes from proper muscle engagement. It may seem counterintuitive but, in order to release a muscle, you must actively engage it's opposing muscle.  You will feel the sensation in the leg you're stretching--not the muscle you're contracting.

  • Example: Forward fold: To stretch your hamstrings, contract your quads.

  • Example 2: To stretch your psoas, which is your primary sitting muscle, contract your booty muscle.

  • Example 3: To open your hips, contract your booty, your lateral leg, and your piriformis muscles.

  • Not sure where your piriformis muscle is, come see me!
