Also in this blog, find out if an alkaline based diet is right for you. Have you ever heard that an alkaline diet can directly affect the acidity or alkalinity of your body? You may know someone who is on an alkaline diet with the rationale being that you can and should lower the acidity in your body. Do we need to lower our acidity? Will it make all our problems go away?
While the data supports that many alkaline foods have good nutritious value, it does not support the premise that you can directly affect your pH levels through your food.
How do we measure acidity or alkalinity? The pH value is how we measure a substance’s acidity or alkalinity. Stomach acid is highly acidic, for example, while blood is slightly alkaline. We need the acids in the stomach to break down foods. Your amazing body tightly regulates blood pH levels automatically. In healthy people, diet doesn’t significantly affect blood pH, but it can change urine pH. Can acid in your diet harm your bones? Research does not support the theory that acid-forming diets harm your bones. Protein, an acidic nutrient, even seems to be beneficial. There’s also no link between an acid-forming diet and cancer. Unfortunately, cancer cells also grow in alkaline environments.
Did our ancestors only eat nuts and berries?
Current studies suggest that about half of ancestral diets were acid-forming, especially among people who lived far from the equator. This doesn't mean we should discount the value of an alkaline diet. The alkaline diet is a healthy alternative that may work due more to the emphasis on consuming plants and limiting processed foods than to changing the body’s pH. Eating more fruits and vegetables, along with curbing your refined carbohydrate, sugar, and dairy intake, may or may not help balance pH levels within your body. Either way, a plant-heavy diet with reduced refined sugar intake has many health benefits and may reduce daily issues and lower the possibility of certain long-term health risks.
