Poor posture is not only uncomfortable, it can have serious negative impacts on your health. Many of us want to sit and stand with better posture and reduce back pain, but not everyone has a clear understanding of even what good posture is, let alone how to get good posture.

If you work in an office and sit at a desk all day, you may be even more likely to have bad posture. It can be difficult to constantly remember to maintain your good posture throughout the entire day. Once you understand more about the effects of bad posture, though, you’ll realize that it’s worth it to try to improve your posture.

Below, we’re sharing five things you should know about the the effects of bad posture on your health. Read on to learn more, so you’ll be motivated to start improving your posture today.

1. Poor Circulation

One thing that you need to know about posture and your health is how poor posture can impact your circulation. You may not think that sitting with your back hunched over would have anything to do with the circulation in the rest of your body, but it can.

Sitting with poor posture can lead to varicose veins, especially in women. Your bad posture is preventing you from getting the circulation you need.

2. Headaches

You may be aware of many of the causes of headaches, but did you realize that poor posture can lead to headaches as well? It's just one of the poor posture effects that many people don't understand.

There is a certain type of headache that starts in the base of your neck, and is caused by sitting with your head craned out, in front of your shoulders. If you work at a desk and your computer is not at the right height, that may be how you are sitting.

If you often get headaches that start at the base of your neck and radiate up, try raising the level of your computer to keep your head in line with your shoulders.

3. Feelings of Exhaustion

Your body wants to be in the correct position. If you are sitting at your desk slumped over all day, your body will be constantly fighting against the position. That's hard work, and as a result, you'll feel the effect of bad posture by being more susceptible to fatigue and feeling of exhaustion.

4. Jaw Pain

If you have poor posture in your neck and shoulders, you may end up feeling the effects of bad posture in your jaw. The joints of your jaw are delicately balanced, and if you're sitting with your shoulders hunched or your head in front of your shoulders, it could cause these joints to misalign, which causes jaw pain.

5. Mood

Poor posture effects more than just your physical health. It can also effect your mood and mental health. People with good posture have more self-confidence, are more alert, and demonstrate a better mood.

If you find yourself in a bad mood or mental slump at work or while sitting down, there are a number of things you can do, including dropping your shoulders and sitting upright, to help turn things around.
